The Magic Flute

Performances

An interactive evening of music, maths and Mozart staged at the Linbury Theatre with Marcus du Sautoy and singers from the Royal Opera House.

18 - 20 April 2013, Royal Opera House

Mozart’s celestial masterpiece Die Zauberflöte is more abstract and surreal than his other operas, and full of strange symbolism and ideas. What is their significance? What are their mathematical and philosophical roots? What is so special about the number three and the Masonic pentagon, and why might Mozart have been drawn to them?

In collaboration with the Royal Opera House Marcus du Sautoy explored with singers and interactive experiments with the audience the tension between order and chaos, symmetry and asymmetry, day and night, and much more in Die Zauberflöte.
